Male Infertility occurs due to various causes. Male Infertility depends upon genetic and environmental factors also. Most important cause of male Infertility has been known to be due to low sperm count.
Azoospermia
Azoospermia or nil sperm is the most severe form of male factor infertility where man has no sperm in his ejaculation. In other word it can be said that absence of sperm in the semen of a man.Azoospermia can also be known as man having not measurable amount of sperm in his ejaculation for fertilization to proceed. It can be associated with very low level of fertility and even sterility. In human Azoospermia affects about 3 percent of population and even go up to 20 percent of Male Infertility.
CLASSIFICATION
Azoospermia can be classified into various types as listed below but many of the conditions lead to Oligozoospermia rather than Azoospermia-
(I) Testicular Azoospermia- Testis are abnormal, atrophic or absent. Sperm production is severly disturbed. Testicular failure occurs that includes absence or failure to produce sperm and maturation arrest during process of Spermatogenesis.
(II) Pretesticular Azoospermia-Pretesticular Azoospermia includes inadequate stimulation of normal testicle and genital tract. This occurs as Follicle Stimulating hormone is low (Hypogonadatrism) that leads to inadequate stimulation of testis to produce sperm.
(III) Post testicular Azoospermia- In Post testicular Azoospermia sperms are produced but not ejaculated. It is a condition that affects 8 to 80 percent f men. Physical obstruction of the post the post testicular genital tract leads to this condition. Vasectomy done to induce contraceptive reason is the most common cause of this. Cogenital obstructions (agenesis of vas deferens as seen in certain case of cystis fibrosis) or acquired obstruction as ejaculatory duct obstruction.
(IV) Testicular Failure- Radiation and chemotherapy due to cancer and trauma, surgery and other cause can lead to testicular failure. Cogenital issue such as certain genetic condition e.g. (kleinfelter syndrome) and sertoli cell only syndrome can lead to this condition.
